An Idea

When you were small did you feel out of place or different?  I have this idea that has been formulating since my late thirties (I'm gettin into my fabulous fifties now,) I have this idea that every person on the planet has at one point felt out of place and different.

In any group of people, when I am feeling awkward, someone else in the group is feeling the same way. Maybe everyone in the whole group is feeling that way, at the same time. I think this happens in every gathering of people, at every every age, in every setting.

I think everyone feels like they are on the outside looking in.

When does it happen that we start thinking certain people never feel insecure, inadequate or imperfect? Famous people sometimes look like they have it all going for them.  We see them on t.v, watch their stories unfold, but even reality t.v. makes it look so much more perfect and comfortable compared to our own lives. I wonder if Kim Kardashian ever feels ugly or stupid. I wonder if  (insert famous actress of your choice here) ever felt like she wasn't worthy, wasn't good enough and didn't fit in.

Closer to reality there is probably at least one person at your workplace who looks like they have it all together.  Or think of church, sometimes there are entire families who seem to be living the dream of the perfect life.  Think back during the school years, college, high-school and jr. high and the first time you really became aware of social differences.

My theory is that every human being no matter how wealthy, beautiful or gifted she is, has felt different and inadequate many times during their lives.

Take a introspection moment here.  Look back at all those times where you were so uncomfortable with yourself and the situation that you wanted to peel off your skin, that you wanted to hide under a rock, that you felt  not good enough...

Add a few people who always look like they have everything together and they always know what they are doing...

Draw a mental picture for yourself.

Now see them with the same pain you felt. See that what is really happening underneath.

What Happened With Me

I remember feeling like an outsider the first time I stepped on school property.  I'd had a small social circle before Kindergarten which consisted of my older brother and some cousins.  A pattern of me feeling different within my own family had already been established and school did nothing but reinforce it from Day One.

After some really pain filled, emotional years as a child I became a Christian at sixteen.  Jesus revealed His love to me and brought me out of a very dark place.  I was filled with despair and hate. I had a hair trigger temper that was capable of very destructive rages.  I loathed everything about myself.  Stupid, fat, ugly, awkward, lost, different, not enough, not good enough.  And I hated everyone else.

And then I met Jesus, Son of God, God in the Flesh, He showed me a love so profound it literally changed my personality.  First He loved me as I was, stupid, fat, ugly, ect.  Then He showed me who I was:  Loved, Wanted, Good Enough to Suffer and Die For.  And then He showed me how He saw everyone else.

How I Became Confident

I think understanding these three things is the key to being the best, most confident person you can be.

Understand who you are
Understand Who loves you.
Understand who everyone else is.

And once you have these three revelations, being the best, most confident You is so much easier.

When I share my art, it's not because I think it is perfect, professional or worth the big bucks.  It isn't perfect.  But very few artists are ever fully satisfied with their work plus we all stated at the same place and we are all on equal playing ground.

I share it because I want you to not be afraid to share yours.  I share it because it is a part of my story.  I share my story because it might make you feel like you are not alone, different, and out of place. I create fearlessly because it is so much fun, I am all most certain everyone on the planet should be doing it too.

Silly Glasses postcard - but it was too fat to send so it went in anenvelope!

Okay.  Maybe not.  But if you want to make stuff---fearing what other people think about it should not be a reason for holding back.  They feel the same fear you feel and they do it anyway.  Some of them even create fearlessly and teach classes!

Art cards from the index card a day challenge at DaisyYello.com#ICAD2016
Confidence may not happen for you like it did for me.  And sometimes it is a process.  (Almost fifty, did I say?  I am still learning stuff.  Which is actually kind of wonderful when I think about it.)  But if you haven't started the process what are you waiting for?

Did you make any New Year's resolutions to be more confident?  Did you make any decision to become a better You?  Did you Pick a One Word this year that has been guiding you on a pathway to more positive wonderfulness in your life?

If you did , Yourdori.com & The Gratitude Girls Cheer League is hosting a Heart Check event on facebook. You are invited.  There are five daily prompts for comments and photo sharing.  (feel free to go back and do the previous prompts!)  Comments will get you entered to win a coffee gift card and a "flip book" made by me.

If we are to teach are children to be confident, we must learn the path for ourselves too.  Do you think my theory is correct?  How are you learning to be a more confident person?

2011-2012: All
2013: Go
2014: Focus
2015: Fearless
2016:?

What is one little word? What is one word for the year?

It's a word that I can explore.  One who's definition I seek to understand, live by, and influence my day, week, month and year.  It's the focus of my journaling (although I haven't been a daily journaler) and creative thought life.

It took me most of 2014 to really understand what FOCUS meant for me.  I struggled finding that word, wrestled with what it could mean and how to apply it - until at the end of November I finally understood.  I don't feel like I really lived it out at all.  Maybe I will need a do-over.

2015 was a  year of going forward, I had no trouble choosing my new word.  It hovered over me and settled into me at the end of December even as I felt overwhelmed with challenges.  Since finding my O.L.W. is apart of my spiritual journey, I prayed about it - or tried to pray, but the certainty of this word being right for this season was just too big.  I didn't need to pray about it because I knew.

Less doubt - more confidence.  Moving forward, not living in the past. Taking risks.  Trusting.  More Faith.  No excuses.

I lived it out the best I could.  Spoke up.  Felt foolish for speaking up.  Made mistakes.  Picked myself up and kept going.  Made new friends.  Met new people.  Shared my creativity.  Tested my limits. Tried new things.  Challenged others to try new things.

It was a great year.  Not perfect, but it shaped me.

I'm still working on my word for 2016.

What's your One Little Word?

I wanted to share this amazing thing that happened right before Christmas.

Maybe it's kind of a crazy thing, but for me, it was answered prayer.  These last couple of months have been hard.  We made a decision to step out in faith and put our family first.  Instead of being practical, I decided to do what my heart was crying out to do, listen to what I thought I was hearing, and make a commitment to be home more.  This put us in an even more difficult financial position then the hard one we have been struggling with for the last several years.

Working less is not a practical, sane choice by any means.

But spending time with my younger children, who need it so much, is crucial.

So, this was a hard Christmas.  I was only able to get two presents for each kid.  But amazingly, they each got the thing they wanted most, plus, out of nowhere, unexpected bounty arrived at our door, again and again.  The Lord sent real life angels to bless my children.

Although my prayers for full abundant provision from the Lord has not been answered yet, my prayers for my children were each answered in very unique ways.  Ways that let me know that the Lord had heard me, had not forgotten me, loved my family, and is not only working on my behalf, but working on the behalf of those I am praying for.

This gift for my daughter is one such answered prayer.

With four kids, September always feels like the start of a NEW YEAR.  The beginning of new things.

It is a month of Transitions.

  • My husband is at work
  • My  part-time Nanny position ended
  • Three kids are in Public School (two in high-school)
  • One kids is in on line school.  At home.  With me.
  • My financial situation is in transition.

This week I had three unexpected days off from my other part time job - and I am putting them to good use.  After being so busy all summer I could hardly think, it's time to get back and plug into the things I want to be doing instead of the things I have to be doing.

You might notice some things there from Brave Girl University - they have downloads on the website created by Melody Ross that I've been playing with.  She and I have this thing in common, we love color.   I've been pushing off my worries with prayer and color.  Last night after I made these pages I finally felt some of my worry dissipate.

Everything is going to be okay.  He's got this.

He's got you.

Have a great day!

The Kraaft Shaak is a little crafty internet shop based somewhere East of me.  This was their first year for a design team and I was to be chosen to be apart of it.  Our mission was to use the Kraaft Shaak's unique mixed media kits in three projects.

A FEW WAYS THIS KIT HAS BEEN USED:

Sandra made a Peacock Necklace

Design Team One Sandra #ksdt2015

Shel made Flip Flops

Design Team One Flip Flops By Shel

Sylvia made a Bunny Sitting On a Box

Design Team One Easter Box by Sylvia

My creative Brain kind of exploded a few times with all the ingenuity to come out of this mixed media kit.

If you are a mixed media newbie.  If you are a mixed-media oldie.  If you are a scrapbooker, art journaler, use art therapy, have a artsy, creative child, know someone who has an artsy creative child, or if you are a person who loves to be FEARLESS and try new things- This KIT is For YOU.

But all good things must come to an end and this is my last challenge for the team.  My challenge was to Kill the KIT.  Which means, to use everything up.  Now I wish I had better photos, but over the last few months I basically spread everything from the kit all over my bedroom craft space.

I do have a couple of photos...

2 oz paint goes farther than you think.

This is the remains of my eggshell colored Prima Chalkboard paint and my Prima Sand Texture Paste Samples from the kit.
My project started by using a ruined project...it was a picture that had sustained a nasty spill of dark paint across the face of it and I couldn't get it off even after trying.  So I tore it all apart, and started over.  The Kit came with a sample selection of ephemera papers - lovely map pages, tissue thin dictionary pages, book pages.  All the stuff I love to use as the first layer of a collage.  I had a few of these left after my other projects ( the necklace and book) - so I tore them up to cover the old project.

The kit comes with a sample paper pack.  It has enough papers for several projects.
I used some in all three of my challenges. I used the Prima chalk board Paint in two of the challenges.

I've made something like this before with a silhouette...but I couldn't get this one right.  I hated it.  It wasn't fulfilling my vision. At. All. So I tore this apart and Friday morning at about 5:30 a.m and  then I raided my daughter's toy box.

One of the things I had left in the kit were some lace ribbons and gauze.  I had meant to use those in the first attempt had incompletely forgotten my goal to use up the rest of goodies in the mixed media kit.  Now I had my chance to incorporate them.

I layered the ribbons and gauze with tissue papers to add the dimension I wanted to recreate my original idea properly.

This theme means a lot to me personally (feel free to ask me about it!) But I'm so curious to see how other's respond to this piece that I am not going to tell it's story.  I wonder if it might have a story for you?

Kraaft Shaak Mixed Media Kit

To get an idea of what is in this kit, and how much I had to play with you might want to check out this video from Sherrie, who answered the call for the next design team.  She share's all the oodles of the things that come in the kit and cracks me up at the same time.

Did you watch it?  Did you see how much is fun and craftiness is packed into this little box?  Do you think I managed to use up everything in that box?

Well, I used up most of it.  There is still a wee bit chalk paint left, I have a map page left, and a book page that was suppose to go into the mini-book I created for the very first challenge...and I found a couple of those little sequins left over too.  So, I totally failed to "kill the kit."

But I wounded it.  Badly.

Now, Don't forget the coupon.  Don't forget to visit the Kraaft Shaak. (where there are tutorials, hangouts, hilarity, community, and art supplies everywhere)  Don't forget to buy a mixed media kit.  It's a boredom buster for kids ages eight and up at the very least. And there are loads of things you can make from it.  Check out the Design Team page at the Shaak if you're low on ideas and let me know if you make something crazy...like, FLIP FLOPS!

Be Blessed!

I was not always a grateful girl.  Ummmm. No.  There have been a few times when I couldn't see past my feet, that is, I couldn't see past myself and was only able to stew in my disappointments.

Tattered Angels Mists, Card, Valentines Day, The Heart of Gratefulness

You Matter.

Whoever you are. Where ever you are.  Because you are alive.  You matter.

One of the core values of my personal faith is that in spite of our individual actions, beliefs, thoughts and feelings there is Someone Greater at work who declare's "You Matter."

As apart of the New 2015 Canvas Corp Brands design team I was sent this card with some beautiful Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist Sprays. My first February challenge is to make a Valentine Card and give it away to someone who doesn't expect it.

Now if you have read any of my posts since January, you know I'm all about Creating fearlessly yet I will be honest, I was quite intimidated by all the other design team examples.  Canvas Corp Brands has recruited a huge team of seriously talented crafters and designers. I am blessed, excited and slightly overwhelmed at being apart if this incredible crowd.  I had no idea how I could make my card pretty and yet stand out in a good way from the rest of the team.

After several tries, in the end I just had to power forward and go with my gut.  I tried to think of something that would be memorable.

Valentine for A Stranger

Tattered Angels Mists, Card, Valentines Day, The Heart of Gratefulness

I met the recipient for my Valentine Card during the rush hour commute home.

After a long day.  And I'm starving.

This is not wise.  I don't recommend it.

I do ridiculous things on an empty tummy, such as go grocery shopping and come home with a eighty dollars of snacks but not one thing I can use to make a meal for my family, unless you think M&M's and pretzels make a good dinner, then it's okay.

Or instead I  stop for a supremely not-quite healthy meal paid for using all the change on the bottom of my purse, because I'm thrifty like that.

A couple of times on the drive, I've stopped at a local McDonald's.  I was lured by the inexpensive three bite hamburgers and the One Dollar Diet Coke.

Okay. It's only ONE DOLLAR!  What diet coke addict can resist that?

Anyway, a couple of times there has been a man in very well worn clothes that scream, "I sleep outside!" standing just at the corner of the restaurant holding a sign that says something about, "Spare change, anything helps." He is scraggly.  He smells like wet pavement.  He looks so sad, worn, and tired that it's hard to look him in they eye.

I don't know his story.  I don't know if he is just down on his luck, has a mental problem, or dresses this way for work- I could drive away.  I think I might have driven past him many times.  But twice I gave him my change and I grabbed his hand and prayed for him.

Poor guy.  I think I scared him.  He jumped like I'd hit him with electricity.  I should have asked his permission first but it is one of those times I just acted on impulse.  In my head I am thinking, "My dollar in change is not going to help him. I should do something more."

Prayer is the most powerful thing I have to give him.

When this challenge came up, despite all the people I know, he was the first person I thought of.  I need to find him again and give him this card.  I need to get out of my car and talk to him.  I want to grab his hand again and pray for him. I need to share this experience with my kids so that they can see, so they can know that this man with the hurt in his eyes - he matter's.  He has value.

So- for the month of February I will have this card in my car and stopping often at the McDonald's to see if he is there - I'm not sure he will be.  I'm not sure when or if I will ever see him again.   I am pretty sure he isn't used to crazy ladies in Mom van's slurping giant diet Cokes who want to pray with him.  But, what can being nice to this stranger hurt?  This is my year of living Fearlessly, living outside the box, learning new things and meeting new people.

Can you think of a stranger who might be encouraged with a special card? Let me know in the comments if you give a card to someone who isn't expecting it - I'd love to hear about it.
