Family Issues

Since I like to try to keep my posts short, I am still blogging about my three day and two night stay in Reno last weekend. It's become like a series or something.

Will she get her sandwich?
Will she make it to the graduation? Will she overcome the similarities of home decorating styles she shares with her mother? Will her niece actually graduate? Stay tuned to find out in this life story of epic proportions!

So, there we were...all gathered together at the Hotel-I mean-my Mom's house. My brother took a fifteen hour train ride, his ex-girlfriend and now family-friend, Miss. B took a plane, (a better deal on Southwest then my sweet ride of Alaska) and my daughter and I (also after a plane ride). Five people in a home formally occupied by one, just to give a hint at the interesting sleeping arrangements. Why we all thought to impose on the mother figure, I don't' know. I guess we are all just that rude and poor. And shhhh, don't tell, but I think she loved having the company.

After the Great Sandwich Disappointment of 08, we had to go back to the house to get ready for the graduation. I didn't say, but that whole bread excursion took longer than it should have, casino service comparable a turtle race. It might have had to do with the two waitresses serving forty people spread out in a huge dining room, or maybe not. But everything took forever.

And then all 5 of us had to get ready for the big event.

Now, my brother, who is older than I, and yet still the family baby, tried really hard to look nice for the graduation.

He is proud of his daughter's accomplishments. (She even got to wear a special white bib with her black robe...something to do with an advanced diploma, but I thought it was just to catch the drool from the boredom of long "Your-going-to-change-the-world" speeches.)

My brother, DaPooper, went to the beauty school and spent some $$ to get his hair done in hopes of looking young and dapper. He wanted to look like Legolas from Lord of the Rings. He missed that goal by about 20 years.

What do you think?

I have always thought Dapooper handsome, (so did the girls in highs school) but handsome doesn't equal character or a good paycheck...just saying Mom...and the whole hair thing was a huge issue for his daughter who didn't want to be embarrassed in front of her friends. A grown up should not be playing Lord of the Rings at his daughter's milestone event. Am I right?

Brother looks okay in that last picture...a little like a blond Dracula, or maybe he is just menacing here because my Mom wouldn't let him bring his sword...

I love family drama, especially when I get to watch and not participate. If you listen closely in the background you can hear my evil laugh and whisper of, "I am so going to blog this."

I took a lovely picture of "the-girl-of-the-hour" in her cute dress, and she asked, "Auntie, are you going to put that on your blog?"

What do you think I said?

You, my dear, are a treat! Your brother is...um...a very nice dad to clean up for his daughter. I think the 3rd photo looks great, actually :) Your niece looks like a sweetheart.

  6. Your brother looks like Lucius Malfoy. What does he do for a living that he can get away with hair like that? Is he in a hair band? Just wondering. :-)

  7. Congrats to the grad! Your brother did well getting his hair 'did' for the occasion. My own brother has had a rattail for years (so outdated!) If I could catch him asleep and be 100s of miles away before he woke up, I'd cut it off.
