Now for some culture...

No more birth pains for now.
Instead, let's explore music and television. Think back, what was your first exposure to the passionate music of the opera? Was it from grandma's records? Was it the stream lined tones of the modern eight track? When did you first hear Wagner's Flight of the Valkyries? When did you first hear the march from Carmen?
I remember distinctly.
Bugs Bunny wore metal bra and conical hat with double horns--he was running from Elmer Fudd.
(Flight of the Valkyries)
Gilligan was playing the boy Hamlet in a musical production. "To thine own self be true," he sang. (Carmen)
What songs can you remember being introduced to though the ever illustrious cartoon and the classical experience of the family sit-com?

I've not been exposed to opera in that sense? My family was not one of culture. As a result, I have difficulty sitting still and listening to things of this nature. Although strangly I can sit still and listen to the screeching guitar riffs of metallica

  4. The opening scene in White Nights with Mikhail Baryshnikov dancing to Bach's Passacaglia and Fugue. I was hooked.

  6. All of my classical music exposure during my formative years was through cartoons. Primarily Bugs Bunny (who also introduced me to Flight of the Valkyries, and is still one of my favorite episodes), but also through anime (pronounced "an-ih-may", a Japanese contraction of our word animation). When I was sixteen, I took a class that exposed me to some of the older composers just through the medium of music, and I've been been hooked ever since. However, I just can't do opera. Sorry, I just don't get it. I'm going to go play my video games now.

I saw "Cinderella" with Stuart Damon and (ugh..forgot the actress' name!) in 1969. It was a musical broadcast on t.v. I was 7 and fell in love with Stuart Damon. Deeply.

  9. Oh, and opera? That would be Nessun Dorma by the Three Tenors (Pavarotti, Domingo, Carreras.)

    Who wouldn't be hooked?

  10. I've always been a big cartoon fan, so my first exposure was definitely from Bugs Bunny.
